THE PROBLEM IN PERSPECTIVE: Having worked for 20 plus years in private non-profits as a front-line worker, clinical supervisor and program director I observed that frequently the person who became the Executive Director or CEO of non-profit organizations are frequently "The Last One Standing." Everyone else had retired, went on to bigger and better things, where content to remain a front-line worker or supervisor or whatever and the one person who was left got the nod from the agency's board of directors to take on the responsibility of directing the agency. This is not to say the new director was incompetent, uncaring or irresponsible. Rather, just like the technician who opens their own business, frequently they were a caring counselor and competent clinical director but when they have the whole agency dumped in their lap it can be a bit overwhelming. We provide coaching services for the director or the aspiring director of non-profit organizations so they can be what they need to be for their agency, so their agency can fulfill its purpose and so the director can keep their sanity through it all.
As a side note, if your agency is a counseling/social work/psychotherapy agency you may want to visit the Director's Training program at our companion site to see if it would meet your needs. My background is in counseling so it shouldn't be surprising that program would lean in that direction.
There isn't really much difference between the for-profit and the non-profit organization. A non-profit has to make more money this year than last to keep up with expenses and to give its people raises. It makes a profit in order to cover those times between funding cycles. When you boil it down the only real differences between non-profits and for-profits is they have different tax designations and the non-profit is intended to perform some public good or services.
Because of the similarities the outline of the program for non-profits is the same as for the small business but obviously the emphasis meets the unique aspects and characteristics of managing the non-profit.
